Scattergories rules
Object of the Game: The goal of the game is to score the most points by coming up with unique answers for each category within 60 seconds.
Set Up: Each player gets a Scattergories answer sheet and a category list, which contains 12 categories and a letter of the alphabet.
Game Play: The game is played over three rounds. In each round, a letter of the alphabet is randomly selected using a 20-sided die or a letter generator. Players then have 60 seconds to come up with words or phrases that fit the 12 categories on the list, with each answer starting with the selected letter.
Scoring: After each round, players compare their answers with each other. Players score one point for each answer that is unique and fits the category. If multiple players have the same answer, none of them get points for that answer. For example, if the category is “Famous Scientists” and the letter is “B”, if multiple players wrote “Bill Nye”, none of them get points for that answer. At the end of each round, players tally up their points.
Bonus Points: Players can earn bonus points in each round by being the only player to come up with a correct answer in a particular category. They can also earn two bonus points if they manage to come up with an alliterative answer (where all the words in the answer start with the selected letter).
End of the Game: After three rounds, the player with the most points is declared the winner. In the case of a tie, a sudden-death round can be played to determine the winner.
Rule Variations: There are many variations of the game, including playing with teams, using different categories, and changing the time limit. If you find that 60 seconds is too short, you can adjust the time limit to better suit your group’s preference.
